BREAKING NEWS!

Supporters of Save Shalimar –

On behalf of the Shalimar Association and Save Shalimar campaign, I am very pleased to share the following information with you. After over 2 years of opposition, the proposal to rezone the Shalimar property and build high-density rentals has been withdrawn by the Developer!

This is a major milestone and achievement for the Save Shalimar campaign.

We realize you will all have questions on ‘what is next’. We ask that you have a little patience as we gather information from different sources. We will provide additional information as soon as we can.

Let’s all please take a moment to celebrate this milestone.

This would not have been possible without the broad-based support of the Shalimar Association, Shalimar Community, Tempe Citizens far and wide, and the support of the Mayor and City Council.

Regards,

Carl Streiff

President Shalimar Association / Save Shalimar Campaign

  1. Can we offer the owners a monthly stipend to subsidize the operation of the course? Are there balance sheets and P N L’s that we can look at?

  2. Builder said for now, they are withdrawing. If the two upcoming bill are passed and Maricopa County takes over City, citizen choices ,B & B homes could comeback in because the county could be on developers side

  3. I am pleased with this result. My father played golf at Shalimar during the few years he lived with me prior to his passing in 2012. I’m hoping there can be a lasting and just final resolution, the legal owners of the property have a right to the funds associated with this land, they have been waiting a long time.

  4. Best news ever!!! Hopefully there is a group ready to pick up this gem of a property from the owners and be able to maintain it as a golf course. I live directly across from the entrance and it is just so sad to see it in its currently condition. I am not alone when I say it would be WONDERFUL to have a golf course and clubhouse back for the community!!! Great job everyone who has worked tirelessly to get this done.

  5. Hey Carl,

We are very happy that the rezoning has been withdrawn. However, I read that they are exploring development as one acre lots as noted by current zoning. Have you heard anything about it staying a golf course or anything else? Again, we thank you for all the work you and the association have done to protect Shalimar.

    • Hi –

The developer BB Living – Branden Lombardi, stated his intention is to build 160 units on the property. 1 primary house + 3 ADU’s on every acre. His intention is to make them all rentals. We are pretty sure this was not the intention of the Arizona State Legislature when they passed HB2720 (ADU bill). Attempting this will no doubt end in some kind of litigation. But we will see.

With imagination and the right developer, the course can remain with some reasonable development (residential or even commercial). So much potential.

We now wait to see what ‘building as zoned’ looks like to a developer. Once a plan is submitted, we will share with the community.
Near term: Keep pressure on the City of Tempe to hold the owners accountable for maintaining the property.
