Simple Actions Needed

Friends and Supporters of Save Shalimar –

Your help and engagement is needed.

Show you care. Show you won’t let every open space be filled. Let your voice be heard regarding responsible zoning and development in Tempe. Shalimar is worth saving! Help stop this madness. The owners have no right to a rezoning. They have a right to sell – at the current zoning of 1 house/acre. That is how it was purchased. That is the expectation of how it will stay. The owners (who do not reside in the neighborhood) do not get to decide how this property is zoned.

Share the petition with your Tempe Friends, Family and Co-Workers! Every citizen, every voter in Tempe – we need your support! https://saveshalimar.com/petition/

Let the Tempe City Council know how you feel about this 44-acre greenspace. The Mayor + City Council have 100% control of zoning approval. Your voice matters! Email: councilcommunicator@tempe.gov

Scorched earth actions have been initiated by the Shalimar owner in conjunction with the Developers BB Living & Cachet Homes efforts to sell this hell to the neighborhood and all Tempe residents. No Rezoning!

Thank you for your ongoing support!

Regards,

Carl Streiff for The Shalimar Association / Save Shalimar Campaign

    • Hi – it is the same petition. We are just trying to gather as many signatures as we can prior to presenting it to the City of Tempe (we do have a protest petition filed, this is a general petition open to all citizens of Tempe). Thanks for asking and thanks for your support. We are remaining in a good position to challenge this rezoning.

  1. Are there particular points I should make in the email? I want to speak from the heart, but also be clear in what I’m asking from the city council.

    • Hi –

Speak from the heart. Mention that you want to see this greenspace saved from development. It has been a part of Tempe for 6+ decades. There is no valid reason to destroy this community asset. Do not approve rezoning.

      Thanks for your support!

  2. I just sent an email expressing my views against the rezoning. I live across the street from Shalimar. Thank you for keeping us informed.

    • Thank you. I appreciate the feedback. Got to stay strong. The owner/developer is not backing down from their stack and pack plan.

      • well that is what you predicted.

Hopefully the mayor and council will be swayed by the petitions and strong community opposition.

  4. Hi there. Thank you for keeping us informed. Is there any plan or avenue to fight against the scorched earth actions? For example, are they violating any ordinances by killing existing vegetation?

    • Prior to the closure we have done our best to warn the community of the potential for ecological disaster. We documented all the trees, greenery, and birds and wildlife. From the City of Tempe, they look at code enforcement issues, but I do not believe they get into the details regarding damage to the environment that is Shalimar.

I personally am maxed out trying to just stay on top of what I have going. The reality is we need volunteers to at least reach out and ask questions.

We could sure use some help.

Some agencies that could be called upon:

Arizona Game and Fish Department (AZGFD) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ), and the Arizona Attorney General are all potential sources of support.

Any help in this regard would be appreciated.

  5. I wrote the council an email and got a quick reply back. To me it sounded negative. I’ll paste it here.

Thank you for contacting Tempe City Hall and sharing your thoughts about Shalimar Golf Course.  We understand the position you have expressed and your desire for the Shalimar property to remain an open green space.  Please know that Mayor Woods and all members of the Tempe City Council have received your email.

While this proposal for single-family housing and a greenbelt is in a preliminary site plan review stage and has not been formally presented to the Development Review Commission nor advanced to a Council agenda for consideration, there are some general points that I would like to share.  As a longtime resident, you are likely aware that Shalimar is located on private property and is being sold by the Neuheisel family.  Therefore, private property rights is a factor to consider regarding Shalimar Golf Course and its future.  Another aspect is the voter-approved General Plan 2050  and the previous General Plan 2040, which identified the Shalimar property as an area for potential single-family housing.

I will share your email with the Community Development Department.  Please continue to stay engaged in the process.

    • Julie –

We agree with your assessment that the response reads pretty negative. We have heard the same from others. There also are some inaccuracies and misleading information included in the response.
Private property rights, the 2040 plan, the 2050 plan – none of these have anything to do with the real issue: Rezoning. It has been, is and will always be about rezoning. The owners have a right to sell. They do not have a right to rezoning. Please keep letting the city council know your feelings. The Save Shalimar campaign will be sending a response regarding the city’s canned, somewhat dismissive response to you and to many others.

      Thanks.
