Just Say No to Rezoning!

Save Shalimar Supporters –

Thank you for your continued support of our campaign. The fight to preserve this Tempe landmark from developer destruction is ramping up. The Owner/Developer is getting ready for their big push for rezoning. They will be holding neighborhood meetings in early June to try and convince anyone they can that their high-density development and destruction of a 44-acre greenspace is in the best interest of Shalimar neighbors and the surrounding community. We all know better.

The property is NOT sold. The property is NOT approved for rezoning. The property is NOT approved for development. These are the facts. Don’t let hired Developer PR messengers tell you otherwise. The owner/developer is fencing up the property. This is all part of their plan to create a vision of abandonment and desolation in order to scare people into thinking that the only way to resolve the crisis they have created is by letting the bulldozers in.

Your petition signatures are appreciated. Thank you for sharing our online petition and QR code. Opposition to rezoning is only growing. Link to our petition: https://saveshalimar.com/petition/

Please take the time to let the leadership of Tempe hear from you! Let them know how you feel about Shalimar. Your voice matters! To reach the mayor and all councilmembers, Email: councilcommunicator@tempe.gov

We are always looking for people to speak at the Tempe City Council in support of Save Shalimar. It is a very simple process, maximum time to speak is 3 minutes. It is a great opportunity to share what Shalimar means to you and to ask the city council directly for their support. There are upcoming meetings on 5/1, 5/22, 6/5 and 7/1. We could really use volunteers. Please let us know if interested. We can provide you additional information on the process. Email: info@saveshalimar.com.

We will be communicating frequently via Facebook, the Save Shalimar website, and email as the developer progresses in the formal process toward ultimately presenting their request to the Tempe City Council. Please check back frequently to stay up to date on the latest information.

Thanks in advance for your support and assistance as we see this fight through a favorable resolution. First things first, no to rezoning.

Regards,

Carl Streiff

  1. Hello – I’m a life-long Shalimar golfer, raised in this Neiborhood and was taught how to golf at this course. So sad to see it go.

I’d like to provide a reasonable suggestion that may assist in this unfortunate battle. This is what I suggest:

    1) provide a reasonable development for a small townhome community that will match the current community – these can be HIGH END townhomes/condos that can list for much more than the current homes. LESS HOMES AND HIGHER PROPERTY VALUES – Gated community etc.

    2) Develop a small community park to save some of the green space so the public and wildlife can enjoy. Possibly around the body of water near hole 5.

    3) Develop a new lit driving range to continue to provide the sport to the community and save the “Shalimar” name. This Shalimar driving range can include the chipping green and putting green, so golfers can still enjoy golf in the community. Also, this can allow for a Shalimar Kids Golf Acadamy that can host lessons and fund raisers throughout the year. IF the bar/restaurant could be renovated, this could still be a great venue for weddings and events and could be compared to a “Top Golf” environment with the right team and investors.

I truly think it’s important to arrive at a COMPROMISE. I think a mix of developments will help accomplish all goals, for all parties. I’d love to see a CLEAN & REASONALBE development for matching/luxury condos along with a beautiful community park AND a functional high tech driving range.

It would be a beautiful thing.

    I hope this helps.

    • Great ideas. You are thinking the way many of us are. There is nothing wrong with a compromise. The biggest problem is the owners have no interest in anything but the current proposal. They are not interested in any sort of compromise. We are not giving up. We have an investor that will be making a proposal to the owners next week. Because of the owner’s position, we have no choice but to continue to fight the rezoning. Opposition to rezoning is critical. If we stop the rezoning request, it will force the owners to consider other options. Unfortunately, until they are told NO by the City Council, they are going to press on. Hopefully we can get to a point of compromise. The problem is you need two willing parties. The owners have indicated nothing other than the high-density, money-making plan (for them). This really does suck as we are watching a beautiful place being destroyed, all to the benefit of one family – who do not live in Shalimar.
